During the London trip, I was visited 4 Animation companies which located in SOHO area.

The person who was from Studio AKA, the first company in our list, give us a lot of  information about what work a Animation company is involved in, and the main tasks of each department.

In Framestore CFC, we known that this company specializes in films post-production,person there show us some works they have been done last year, things they are most proud of is that involved in a part of the production of Avatar. They also sketch their works for the next year, like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The third company we visited called Passion Pictures; it is a veteran of the British Animation company which had a lot of successful works, such as commercials for SONY BRAVIA ‘PLAY-DOH’ and AUDI Q5 ‘UNBOSED’, etc. For me, it was a wonderful experience; because I was interest in contrast the different between 3D Animation and 2D Animation. In this company we had an opportunity to see both departments and their works; I’ve got a clearer impression of the different from create to post-processing between two kinds of animation. The last company we visited was the Cartoon Network Europe, two people from this company shown us some Children’s TV programs, also gave us some advises about doing the Children’s programs, for example, what rules need to comply with, or how to arouse interest in children’s viewing, etc. Maybe I just not interest in the Children’s TV Show, I do not have too many particular information here.

The benefits I gain from going on London industrial visit are to know much about the Animation industry and how an animation company operations. This trip gave me an opportunity to know other people’s ideas and their different ways to make the animation. The most useful advice gained from speaking to people from the companies was “The best way to add this industry is being a runner.” Its make me think that a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step, do not to aim at the moon in the beginning. What I need to do is upgrade my professional skills, and keep an open mind.

The following content is based on research and notes collected

An animation process into six stages: Planning, Production budget,

Pre- production, production, post-production, and Screenings, publicity, marketing.

1. Planning

2. Production budget

3. Pre- production

Pre-production is the phase of further developing ideas and planning prior to the process of production. In an animation sense it is the period before any real animating takes place.

Pre-production include

a. write a script

b. Main character design and scene design

c. Storyboard

d. Animatic.

Pre-preparation often spend time on communication (both internal and external), sometimes may very complicated and bored, but it will bring a lot of convenience for future work.

4. Production

The production phase is often the longest and busiest phase of the animation project. On a mainstream project many animators and artists will be working together in teams.

Production include

a. Production Roles

b. Drawing Guidance

c. Act the Part

d. Dopesheet

e. Layouts

f. Walk Cycle

g. Line Test

h. Ink and Pa Paint

First, according to Pre-preparation process Storyboard draw each scene animation design draft, which includes each of the lens used for the background line of draft, figure composition and exercise tips; later under the animation is issued drawn coloured background, the original artwork, animation draft, this is the most difficult animation and the maximum workload of the process, but it also can be the most fun in the process.

5. Post-production

Post-production is the final stage in the process of creating an animation and involves exporting or rendering out the animation frames and then editing the pieces of animation together using video editing software. The sound track, including sound effects, is also added during the final edit.

Post-production include

a. Rendering

b. Compositing

c. Editing

d. Sound Editing

e. Sound and Music Score

f. Titles & Credits

In the Animation post-production process, the background and other the original artwork should be completed then put into the computer with a scanner or digital camera, after that add music, dialogue and sound effects, final output as AVI (Audio Video Interactive) files to broadcast.
